Rosebery Named Parade Marshall
By Casey Faith
Durward Rosebery is being honored as the 2002 Homecoming Parade Marshall. Durward Rosebery moved from Clyde, OK to Tonkawa in May of 1926 and graduated from Tonkawa High School in 1933. It was in that same year that he became Tonkawas first state champion competing in the Class B Track & Field State Championship held in Stillwater. Standing only 58 and weighing 117 lbs., his winning high jump of 62 was quite an amazing fete. He competed in many track & field events including long jump, and hurdles, but high jump was definitely his strongest event. He held Tonkawas high jump record with a jump of 62 for 51 years when in 1984 Will Wyler broke it with a jump of 64.
After graduating high school, Rosebery attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College and then went on to the University of Oklahoma on a full athletic scholarship. In college, his best high jump was 64 and his best long jump was 22 6. He graduated college in 1938 with a degree in chemical engineering and then went to work in Chicago. In 1944 he enlisted in the Navy and served until 1946. After his military service he returned to Tonkawa to work for his father at Tonkawa Milling Company. In 1955, he went to work for Conoco where he worked until his retirement. He still lives in Tonkawa where he is an avid Buccaneer fan.
